Course Enrollment

Riverton Fire and EMS always encourages furthering our members' education in the fire service as well as emergency medical services. Currently Riverton Fire has three members (Fire Fighters: Keith Schenk, Tracy Gustafson, and Carol Good) enrolled in a Fire Fighter II certification course at Dawson Fire Department. This course teaches the basics in the fire service and gives fire fighters a bigger perspective in fire fighting objectives including extinguishment, search and rescue, overhaul, and much more.

Since the inception of Paramedic coverage two years ago members have started to attend the year and a half course to obtain their certification to become a Paramedic. In a couple of weeks three members (Lt. Jon Churchill and Firefighters Todd Suhling and Jeff Meyer) will be attending Lincoln Land Community College's certification course. We would like to congratulate these six members for their dedication to further their education outside of the regularly schedule education opportunities.

Hose Testing

If you happened to drive by Riverton's Middle School on Wednesday the 6th you might have witnessed Riverton Fire and EMS' two engines and squad in the parking lot. Riverton Fire and EMS has started their annual hose testing which tests all fire hose in service. With this in mind one engine holds about 2000 ft. of hose and all must be stretched and tested at 300 PSI for 5 minutes. With this dedicated staff they test, service and maintain all equipment as well respond to calls. Each engine requires one night of training with another night for all spare hose. This is a total of 3 nights of hose testing.

Weather Camera

With the addition of Riverton Fire and EMS' weather station we have added another new piece of technology. A live tower camera has been outfitted to our radio tower to provide a live feed of outside weather facing the southwest part of Riverton. This camera has been generously donated by Lt. Steve Mueller. And has a place on Riverton's Weather Page as well as its own link below.

MABAS Light Trailer

Riverton Fire and EMS has added a new piece of equipment. Although not permanent Riverton Fire and EMS is storing and using the MABAS (Mutual Aid Box Alarm System) 48's light trailer. This trailer holds four high power lights that can be elevated to 30 ft. and has a diesel equipped generator to power those lights. This light trailer is paid through the MABAS organization that many Sangamon County departments are enrolled in. A rotation of equipment is set and Rochester and Springfield Fire Departments also store equipment as well.

Technical Issues

Recently Riverton Fire and EMS has been experiencing some internet outages ranging from a couple of minutes to a whole day. Our server has as well been down for a couple hours. With these two problems you might have noticed that this web site was not working properly. This is a result of our web site being hosted on our own server which lowers the cost to our department as well as offering our members their own e-mail for business as well as personal use. We apologize for the inconvenience and would like you to know that we will, as always, continue to provide current information.

Weather Station

Riverton Fire and EMS has recently purchased a weather station for monitoring wind speed and direction, rain fall, temperature, and more. This is a great benefit for our response to weather related emergencies and severe weather watches. This data is also available to community members via the link below. This data is updated every minute automatically.
