The Riverton Area Fire Protection District ,RAFPD for short, is an all volunteer
department consisting of 34 members. Much of our history has been lost over time
and little is known, but Riverton Fire and EMS started out as an all volunteer department
before the 1900s and was called the International Order of Good Tempalar Fire Department
of Riverton . In 1906 Riverton Fire and EMS, then The Riverton Volunteer Fire Department,
created a charter that would last until 1975 when Riverton became a fire protection
district (see link below to view a copy of the charter). Now Riverton Fire and EMS
serves a community of 5000+ with Riverton (population 3800) and the towns of Barclay,
Clearlake and Spaulding residing in its district. Included in the response area are
two major highways (Old Route 36 and Route 54) and two major interstates (I-

Riverton Fire and EMS started well before 1906, but in that year the State of Illinois certified Riverton Volunteer Fire Department as a corporation with a board of three elected members.
