Riverton's EMT-B Course Complete

Riverton Fire and EMS EMT-B state certification course has just concluded with a final roster of ten. Out of that ten member roster five members of Riverton Fire and EMS completed that course. The next step is state certification test to obtain their certifications in being an EMT-B.

EMT-B stands for Emergency Medical Technician-Basic Level. That is the minimum and is the starting point for those to further their education and become EMT-P or Paramedics. EMT-Bs can perform immobilization techniques (such as the one in the picture to the left), basic airway techniques, splinting and immobilization techniques, CPR, and much more.

We would like to personally congratulate Lt. Steve Mueller, FF Sean Luedtke, Probationary Members: Jean Hillyer, Bill Roberts, Becky Kell.

Open House

Riverton Fire and EMS held an open house and dedication ceremony on Sunday the 8th. In attendance were Representative Mitchell and Dr. Holland whom both spoke in the opening ceremonies. We would like to thank all of those that attended the open house as well as the Clear Lake Township and then Village of Riverton.

Water Rescues

Riverton Fire and EMS members had a busy extended weekend. On Thursday June 6th Riverton responded to a water rescue on Oak Crest Rd. Responding was a Chief, Squad, and Boat to rescue a gentleman that was stranded on the opposite bank after his car floated and capsized in the flooded waters. The gentleman was rescued and car was pulled from the swift waters.

On Sunday the 8th Riverton responded to two men trapped in the Sangamon River near Wheeland Park. The two men were floating down the river when there flotation device capsized and threw them into the water without lifejackets. They came in to a group of trees and held on for over 2 hours before 911 was called and Riverton Fire and EMS responded with a Chief, Squad, Engine and Boat response. Sangamon County Rescue Squad also responded with a boat and personnel. The two men were rescued and were checked out by Springfield Area Ambulance while on scene and determined not to be injured.

Flooding

On Saturday June 7th Riverton members filled, hauled, and placed numerous amount of sandbags through out Holiday Estates. Members spent both the morning and evening of the 7th. Sangamon County Rescue members also respond to help Saturday night. Numerous community members showed their support, as well as, a couple from the state of Delaware who were driving through the area. We would like to personally thank the Sangamon County Rescue Squad, Riverton and surrounding community members, and the couple from Delaware.

Extreme Weather

With the recent amount of extreme weather Riverton Fire and EMS members, in cooperation with Riverton ESDA Services, have been on the look out for severe weather with an added bonus. With these increased weather events owners of GRLevelx.com and Allisonhouse.com have provide Riverton Fire and EMS with an incredible weather program and data network free of charge. That program is GRlevel3 which is a radar program that has been personally purchased and used for over a year by members of Riverton Fire and EMS for weather spotting within and outside of Riverton's Fire Protection District. This program is a huge addition to protect the community of Riverton from sever weather events. We would like to personally thank both companies for there generosity.

Riverton's EMT-B Course

For several months Riverton Fire and EMS has been holding an EMT-B course at Riverton's Fire Station. This class not only benefits Riverton Fire and EMS because 5 members are enrolled in the course, but the surrounding communities with providing a smaller and more individualized class. Instructor and Captain Sara Fricke held a practical session on May 31st to evaluate students on the skill level. Firefighters' Memorial

Members attended the Annual Illinois Firefighters' Memorial on Thursday May 15th. This event draws attention state wide and pays tribute to those that make the ultimate sacrifice of death on the job. Below are pictures from that event.
